La Vuelta has started! Vifit Sport sat down with the cyclists from our partner, team Jumbo Visma, that will take the challenge in Spain. In this series of speed interviews, you will get to know the riders a little bit better. Today we sat down with Danny van Poppel.
When was the first time you rode a race bike?
"I think at the age of 5, when I was 8 I started doing races."
How does it feel to continue the legacy of your dad as a pro-cyclist?
"It is nice to follow in his footsteps. I do not feel any pressure, which is a question I get asked a lot."
What is the second most popular sport in the family Van Poppel? Or are there no other sports interests?
"Besides cycling nothing special."
What is the most important characteristic for a sprinter?
"It is important to not have any fear."
Who is your sports hero?
You are described as more of an introvert; how do you deal with all the attention around being a pro-cyclist?
"It starts to become normal that you get attention outside of riding, but it is nothing new for me since my dad was famous."
After being part of team Sky, what brought you back to the Dutch team?
"The opportunities I get here are very special to me. Over the last years I see that the team keeps getting better and it is nice to be able to speak Dutch, my native language."
What is the ultimate goal you hope to reach in the future?
"I hope to win many big stages in grand tours, that is what I like most. Grand tours suit me well. The Milan San Remo is a big goal!"
And for now, what are your goals for La Vuelta?"Win a stage with the team!"
