The biggest cycling race in Europe is taking place right now, so here’s some race trivia for you to impress your friends with.

  • Cycling teams bring on average 4000 nutrition bars, 3000 water bottles, and 80kg of nuts, raisins, and apricots - that’s A LOT of snacks!
  • Over 12m people stand at the side of route, and it’s cheaper than going to a football game (because it’s free!)
  • The race was cancelled 11 times during WW1 and WW2, but it’s still been going strong for 115 years!

  • The race is also called ‘The Big Loop’, or in French ‘La Grande Boucle’ because it’s a giant loop around France.
  • Maurice Garin, the first winner of the race in 1904, was actually disqualified for cheating after he was caught taking a train to the Alps for the last stage. Whoops!
  • The cyclists never stop cycling. Literally. To stop lactic acid building up they stay on their bikes pedalling during rest periods.
  • Finally, the entire peloton gets through 790 tyres over the course of the 3 weeks.
