What you need to know about triathlon!


Triathlon, it is becoming more and more popular. Not only men but also an increased number of women nowadays take part in this intensive sport. But what is triathlon really? Vifit Sport explains!

What is triathlon?

Triathlon is an endurance sport. And not just any, it is a combination-duration sport. In this sport, three disciplines are performed one after the other. The three different sports within triathlon are: swimming, cycling and running. You can imagine that combining all of these three sports requires a lot of stamina!

A whole-, half-, quarter triathlon... HELP!

A triathlon has many different distances, but which exactly are there? By default, there is a difference in distance between the three disciplines itself. Fortunately, because 40 kilometres of cycling is of course not equal to 40 kilometres of running and don’t even start about 40 kilometres of swimming. Imagine that you should do this all together! No, the three disciplines in the triathlon are well attuned and each has its own distance, proportionally. Besides the differences between disciplines, there is also a difference in distance for the entire triathlon. What exact distances are there? In the table you see an overview:

In addition to differences in distances, shorter and more spectacular triathlons are being organised nowadays. Examples of this are a so-called 'Triple Mix', in which the traditional sequence of swimming cycle loops is thrown overboard. The participants complete a short triathlon three times in a different order, with a short break of 10 minutes between the three triathlons. Or an 'SBRSBR' where every discipline is performed twice. Nowadays even a '111 match' has been added to the triathlon, where there is a 1km swim, a 100km cycle distance and 10km run!

Is 'Ironman' the same as triathlon?

If you have ever heard of triathlon, then you have probably heard of the term 'Ironman'. But what is that really? Ironman is an organiser of important competitions within the triathlon; the Ironman. Many different Ironman’s are organised in a huge number of places around the world. The most famous Ironman is the one in Kona, Hawaii. The annual World Cup takes place here every year. In addition to Ironman, there are also other organisations that provide triathletes with competitions.

The Ironman competitions are not necessarily the complete triathlon distance (3860m swimming, 180.2km cycling, and 42.195km running). No, also the Ironman 70.3 is organised, a 'half-Ironman', for which there is a 1900m swim, a 90km cycling part, and 21.1km run.

Can I participate in a triathlon competition?

In principle, everyone can participate in a triathlon competition. This can be either as an individual athlete or when you are a member of a club. Yet, there are some differences. If you are a member of a club or team, you can participate in league matches. If you are not a member, this is not possible. You can also participate in all other competitions when you are not at a club. Keep in mind that you must purchase a day license to participate!
